We're to pray discretely and privately. I think in the modernism I grew into I felt like my prayers had to be pretty, they should be worthy of others hearing, they are kind of a show, even if they are silent. I have been pushing against that and letting my conversations with God be conversations...picking up where we left off...or simply out of the blue. I'm learning to let go of that modern idol and embracing the conversation.
